MISSION STATEMENT:

The Latino College Preparatory Academy will enable high school English Language Learners to acquire critical skills, in English and Spanish, so that they graduate from high school and be prepared to pursue a college education.

The LATINO COLLEGE Preparatory Academy:

Is a charter high school created jointly between The National Hispanic University and East Side Union High School District. It was established to provide an alternative to students who are not succeeding in a large, traditional high school because of a language difference. The goal of the school is to help students graduate from high school and have an opportunity to attend college proficient in English, Spanish and computers. Latino College Preparatory Academy is housed at The National Hispanic University; a University campus, where students are part of a learning community that includes college students and professors as role models.

Students attend 175 days of school and are encouraged to spend more time each day involved in learning activities. After school programs are available 4 days per week. Students can also participate in sports, clubs, and performing arts programs.  These programs increase the chances of students’ academic success, and  provide them additional opportunities to interact with peers and teachers during tutoring, workshops or recreational activities. Students completing all high school requirements will receive a high school diploma as sanctioned by the State of California.

Curriculum:

Students receive the same curriculum that is presented in traditional high schools, which is based on California subject area "content standards" and other Education Code requirements. Literacy will be emphasized across the curriculum in each content area. Among the course offerings are:

      • Computers
      • English Language Arts
      • Fine Arts
      • Mathematics
      • Physical Education
      • Personal Development & Leadership
      • Science
      • Spanish

Language Development:

Students are taught in English, supplemented by Spanish and a variety of English Language Development instructional approaches, such as Structured English Immersion (SEI), English as a Second Language (ESL). Students participate in a dual language program to develop cognitive skills in both English and Spanish.
