Course Description:

 

English 9                                                      

9th Grade                                                      

 

English 9 is a standards-based course designed to enhance skills in listening, speaking, reading comprehension, language usage, and critical thinking.  The course serves as an introduction to developing academic writing skills in various forms with a focus on expository reading and writing.

Prerequisite:  None

Meets University Entrance Requirements:  CSU, UC(b, g)

 

English 10                                      

10th Grade                                                    

 

English 10 is a standards-based course designed to enhance skills in listening, speaking, reading comprehension, language usage, reading comprehension, and critical thinking.  The course serves as to develop academic writing skills in various forms with a focus on expository reading and writing.  Students are offered opportunities to address critical reading and critical thinking that promotes accelerating the skills in academic reading and writing.

Prerequisite:  English 9 completion

English 10 Honors

English 11                                     

11th Grade                                        

 

English 11 is a standards-based course designed to enhance skills in listening, speaking, reading comprehension, language usage, reading comprehension, and critical thinking.  The course serves as to develop academic writing skills in various forms with a focus on expository reading and writing.  Students are offered opportunities to address critical reading and critical thinking that promotes accelerating the skills in academic reading and writing.

AP English Language                               

11th Grade                                                   

 

This course is designed for juniors who are ready for college level reading and writing. The course emphasizes developing analytical reading skills and the rhetorical style. The AP English Language course focuses on rhetorical strategies and stylistic choices of exemplary prose writers from American and other literary traditions in preparation for the American College Board Advanced Placement Examination in English Language and Composition. The student will read and analyze selected prose works and practice rhetorical analysis skills with work as needed on vocabulary, grammar, and usage to supplement writing skills.

Recommendation:  Completion English 9 & 10

English 12 (ERWC)

Expository Reading and Writing           

12th Grade                                                  

 

This course is adopted from California State University (CSU) Early Assessment Program (EAP). It is a full year college preparatory English course aligned with California English- Language Arts Content Standards and Addresses critical reading and writing problems. This course is created to help students succeed in three important areas: fulfilling requirements of the California English Language Arts Content Standard, achieving standards of the CSU English Placement Test and attaining expectations of college and university faculty.

AP English Literature                               

12th Grade                                                  

 

This course aligns to an introductory college level literary analysis course. Students will engage in close reading and critical analysis of imaginative literature. They will develop a deeper understanding of writer's use of language for both meaning and pleasure. They will consider the structure, style and themes including the use of figurative language, imagery, symbolism, and tone.

Prerequisite: None

Recommendation:  Completion English 9, 10 & 11

English Language Development                   

9th - 12th Grade

High School Credit

 

Academic course that focus on English Language Development with an aim to assist any ELD 1/ELD 2 students whose native language is other than English and whose proficiency in English falls below fluent. This course is designed to develop their speaking, listening, reading, writing skills while addressing English Language Development Standards.
