McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Assistance Act:
The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act is a federal law that ensures educational rights and protections for children and youth experiencing homelessness. Eligible students have the right to immediate school enrollment, educational stability, and access to support services.
Who Qualifies?
Students may qualify if they are:
- Living with friends or relatives due to economic hardship (“doubled up”)
- Staying in a motel or hotel
- Living in a shelter or transitional housing
- Living in a car, campground, park, or public space
- Living in substandard housing
- Unaccompanied youth not living with a parent/guardian
Educational Rights of Students
- Immediate enrollment even without records
- Access to free public education
- Transportation assistance, when applicable
- Participation in all school programs and activities
- Access to meals and support services
- Ability to remain in the school of origin when in the student’s best interest
